The national flag of the Arab Republic of Egypt was adopted officially on October 4, 1984, and is a tricolor with horizontal stripes in red (top), white (middle), and black (bottom). In the center is the eagle of Saladin in gold.

About twice the size of Spain or four times the size of the United Kingdom, Egypt is almost completely covered by desert.

Before the time of the pharaohs, there was an Egyptian king named Menes who is credited as the unifier of Upper and Lower Egypt.

The Pharaohs ruled 3000-341 BC. It was in about 2700 BC that the famous Egyptian pyramids began to appear. The Pyramid of Saqqara is thought to have been the first, then came the Giza pyramids in Cairo.

One of the most visited sites in Cairo – capital of Egypt – is the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities, which contains more than 120,000 objects from the Pharaohs times in display. Pride of place goes to the the funerary mask of solid gold of king Tutankhamun, who ruled from 1361 to 1352 BC. Equally impressive is the Royal Mummies gallery that contains 11 mummified remains.

The Pyramids of Giza, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage, are located west of the city center of Cairo. Best time to visit is early in the morning or mid-afternoon.

In the same complex is one of the oldest and largest statues in the world, the Great Sphinx, a mythical creature that combines the body of a lion with a human head.

The largest of the three pyramids of Giza is the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), built as the final resting place for King Khufu, the ruler of Egypt from 2589 to 2566 BC. It was completed around 2550 BC and is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which remained intact.

Al Khor is a pearl fishing town 40 km north of Doha. There are plenty of photo opportunities around the old harbor and near the mangroves that are full of birds.

Al Zubara on the northwest coast was the most important city in Qatar. A number of archaeological excavations were performed in the area.
