Money in Afghanistan

Money in Afghanistan is very beautiful with brightly colored notes. At the time I was here the exchange rate with the Euro and Dollar was 1 euro = 60 Afghanis, or $ 1 = 65 Afghanistan. Yes, the dollar is worth more than the euro so the U.S. dollar is the best currency to take while traveling in Afghanistan.

The first town I stopped to change money was in Kunduz. I went to a bank but they only accepted U.S. dollars and not euros. A guy working on the bank went with me to the black market in order to exchange 50 euros. There are notes of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Afghanistan. There are also coins of 1, 2 and 5 Afghanistan.

On the streets of Mazar-e Sharif there are guys that sell phone cards, cigarettes and they also exchange money. They have a small stall and a chair to sit. Here the exchange rate is not very bad. Ask several money exchange guys before throwing himself to exchange lots of money. Maybe the next guy on the street has a better rate.

The Money of Afghanistan is called Afghan Afegani.

The notes available in Afghanistan are 10 Afghanis, Afghanis 20, 50 Afghanis, Afghanis 100, 500 Afghanis, 1000 and 5000 afghanis.
