Youth Hostel in Reykjavik, Iceland

Youth Hostel in Reykjavik, Iceland

I was here in this youth hostel in Reykjavik during nearly one week. I tried two types of rooms with 6 beds and 4 beds with private bathroom. Funny that in two of the nights I was alone in the room.

The employees of the hostel when I was there in the summer of 2008 was very international (because I noticed the changes each year because they are all summer jobs), or better, the maids of the inn are all from countries such as Slovenia, Sweden, Lithuania, Netherlands, Poland and Slovakia.

The hostel is super clean, super organized and with a friendly service. There is everything there, the kitchen that can be used with refrigerator, lockers, ping-pong, laundry area with washer and dryer.

There is still a big campsite that many Icelanders use when traveling by 4×4 and have tents. The hostel also has some computers and access to free WI-FI internet in the lounge area which has a TV.

Because the building is too large, there are various kitchens scattered so there is always a degree of privacy. There are also several boxes and baskets full of free stuff from other people who have been away and not consumed.

Transport to the city center

Buses run three times per hour heading up to the city center, it costs 280 ISK.

Transport to the airport

When you want to go to the airport just write your name on the list at the front desk and the next day you have a bus to pick you up and take you to Reykjavik airport.

How to pay less at International Youth Hostels?

Just make a Youth Hostel International member card and you’ll have discounts. For example, here Reykjavik the price without the card is 2450 Iceland Kronur = 16.3 Euros for a bed in a room with four beds and en-suite bathroom, but with the price of the membership card is YHI Iceland Kronur 2050 = 13.6 Euros. I bought the card at the reception, costed 1500 Iceland Kronur = 10 Euros and I ended up also using it in the hostel in Copenhage, Denmark.

Very important! BOOK BEFORE YOU GO!!

I arrived late to Reykjavik because the plane from Barcelona arrived around 3:30 in the morning. The same plane had a few more people who decided to stay in this Youth Hostel in Reykjavik.

I was the only one who had previously booked, the other six didn’t book. We got to the hostel around 4:30 am and only 2 persons of those 6 actually got a bed to sleep since the hostel was fully booked. There is a bus that takes you from the airport to the hotel or hostel in Reykjavik. The bus trip from the airport to Reykjavik costs 1500 ISK and there is one company making the journey which is about 40km far away.
