Chellah, Necropolis in Oued Bou Regreg, Rabat Morocco

Rabat, the capital of Morocco has some points of interest for a full day spent among the oldest parts of the city.

The Chellah necropolis is a complex and ancient ruins in Rabat after the Ville Nouvelle. This small walled city of Chellah, is the oldest city in the mouth of the river Bou Regreg.

The Phoenicians founded Catagenas and a number of colonies in Morocco, and is thought they have inhabited this area of the river. The Romans called this place Sala Colonia and many Roman ruins still standing here: the Decumanus Maximus and the Arc de Triomphe.

This site was abandoned in 1154 AD when the city went to Salé. The Almohad dynasty used this ghost town and necropolis. By the fourteenth century the Sultan Abu l-Hasan, built some monuments and the main gate. Some of these buildings included the mosque, zawiya, and the royal tombs including that of Abu l-Hasan.

Much of this complex was destroyed (like many other things in Morocco) during the Lisbon earthquake in the eighteenth century.

It’s easy to take a taxi to get here (taxis in major cities in Morocco have taximeter). It is also even easier to send the driver to wait and combine the visit to the Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohamed V on the same trip, and still the taxi can then leave you near the walled city of Rabat near the Jewish Quarter and the market.

To charter a taxi for about 2 hours, wait for you and take you to all these place will costing about 80 Dirhams (8 euros) by the taxi meter, plus about 7 euros to the taxi driver. It should not cost more than 150 Dirhams (about 14 Euros) all together. It is worthwhile because it will be moved very easily and thus dividing a taxi for 3 people for example is nothing.
