Blown tank in road side Nagorno Karabakh

The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is a de facto independent republic located in the region of Artsakh in Transcaucasia west of Baku the capital Azerbaijan.

I visited Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2008 during the Rally Caucasian Challenge, an adventure that took me to go into forbidden regions without permission. I crosses amazing roads surrounded by mountains, valleys and crossing paths with tanks blown by war in off-road until I finally reached the capital Stepanarkert.

From Stepanarkert I visited the ghost town of Agdam and down south-east to the line of the disputed border with Azerbaijan visiting some villages and monasteries along the way. When crossing the border out to Armenia I had to stay at least 2 hours trying to convince the border police to let me go since he had no permission to be there – I should have gotten my visa to Nagorno-Karabakh in Yerevan or, if I did enter by the mountains I should have at least gotten the visa in Stepanarkert.
