Meaning of the Flag of Portugal, Portuguese flag
The Portuguese flag is divided into two colored vertical bands, one green and one red.
The green represents hope and the red represents revolutionary aspects of Portuguese recent history.
The coat of arms is in the middle of the flag and within an armillary sphere, an instrument of navigation at sea, representing the major role in Portuguese discoveries.
Within this coat is shown the strong link Christian of Portuguese people.
The five blue shields call the victory of King Alfonso I to the five princes Moors in 1139.
The five white dots inside each blue shield represent the five wounds of Christ on the cross.
The seven golden castles have the seven cities conquered by the Moors.
