Marrakech most well known monument and without a doubt the city landmark, the Koutoubia mosque is a minaret that stands up in Marrakech skyline, and that can actually be seen as far as 30km away on a clear sunny day.
The minaret of Koutoubia Mosque was completed back in the 12th century under the reign of the Almohad Caliph Yaqub al-Mansur. The building is very beautiful and is surrounded by a gorgeous garden and the ancient grounds of the old mosque were still the base of the pillars still remain.

A great photo from Marrakech can be made from Jemaa el-Fnaa square facing the Koutoubia. Great view of this amazing structure. This is a fine example of Moroccan architecture from the Almohad times.
There’s s legend around the top golden spheres on top of the minaret, where supposedly the wife of Yaqub el-Mansur gave all her golden jewelry to melt down to build the fourth globe, as compensation for her failure to keep the fast for one day during Ramadan.
