An influential city for Nabatean trade, inhabited since ancient times, Petra lies in the heart of a rocky valley with breathtaking views. Petra was an Edomite city before becoming the capital of the Nabataean kingdom and at the same time a crucial crossroad between Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Syria.

The archaeological site of Petra lies in a large valley that runs from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba in southwestern Jordan.

Petra is the symbol of Jordan and the most visited destination in the country. The ancient city of Petra remained unknown until the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt discovered it in 1812.

The building called El Khazneh or the Treasury Chamber of Petra, was where the famous movie “Indiana Jones and the Robbers of the Lost Ark” was filmed.

Petra has been occupied by several civilizations since prehistoric times and has suffered many incursions by the tribes of Israel, Romans, and Ottomans.
