Iceland UNESCO has registered 3 sites on the World Heritage list and 6 on the tentative list.

Some places are so interesting that it’s relevant to keep them for future generations. This is why UNESCO has built a list of crucial classified properties in which superb places stand out for their aesthetic, natural, artistic, or cultural significance.

More than a thousand places are registered as Unesco’s World Heritage worldwide. Due to my interest in visiting World Heritage sites, I compiled the UNESCO list in Iceland and the corresponding map.

Description

  1. Þingvellir National Park: is a protected area in southwestern Iceland. It is known for its unique geological features, including the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, visible as a large fissure running through the park. It is also an important site in Icelandic history, as it was the location of the country’s first parliament.
  2. Surtsey: is a volcanic island off Iceland’s southern coast. It was formed in 1963 during a volcanic eruption and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is known for its unique ecosystem, which scientists have studied extensively.
  3. Vatnajökull National Park – Dynamic Nature of Fire and Ice: is a protected area in southeastern Iceland. It is known for its unique combination of glaciers, volcanoes, and geothermal activity and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is home to several active volcanoes, including Grímsvötn and Bárðarbunga, as well as Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull.
