UNESCO Sites in Niger

Niger unesco sites

unesco world heritage sites

Niger UNESCO has registered 3 sites on the World Heritage list and 19 on the tentative list.

Some places are so interesting that it’s relevant to keep them for future generations. This is why UNESCO has built a list of crucial classified properties in which superb places stand out for their aesthetic, natural, artistic, or cultural significance.

More than a thousand places are registered as Unesco’s World Heritage worldwide. Due to my interest in visiting World Heritage sites, I compiled the UNESCO list in Niger and the corresponding map.

  1. The Historic Centre of Agadez is a historic town in northern Niger, at the edge of the Sahara Desert. The town served as an important center for trans-Saharan trade and is home to several historic buildings and landmarks, including the Agadez Mosque and the Agadez Sultan’s Palace. The historic center was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013.
  2. The Air and Ténéré Natural Reserves are located in northern Niger and comprise two contiguous protected areas, the Aïr Mountains and the Ténéré Desert. The reserves are home to diverse flora and fauna, including several endangered species such as the addax antelope and the dama gazelle. They have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.
  3. The W-Arly-Pendjari Complex is a protected area in West Africa, spanning Burkina Faso, Niger, and Benin. It comprises three national parks: W National Park in Niger, Arly National Park in Burkina Faso, and Pendjari National Park in Benin. The complex is home to diverse wildlife, including elephants, lions, cheetahs, and hippos, and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
